What is a #hashtag?

A hashtag is any topic or keyword with a hash symbol “#” at the start to identify it.
The #breastcancer hashtag was used in the tweet shown above. To start using hashtags, select a topic or keyword and place the “#” symbol in front. You might want to do a Twitter Search first to see if there is already a specific hashtag in use on your topic. If there isn’t, then you can create your own hashtag by placing the “#” symbol in front of your keyword. Using hashtags is a great way to connect with others on a specific topic. To follow a hashtag, just type the hashtag into Twitter Search and you will see all tweets consisting of that hashtag in real-time. This comes in handy if you want to follow a trending topic or create one of your own.
