Following the success of its inaugural Summit of 2009, the West Islip Summit Coalition will host the Second Annual West Islip Summit, an event that brings to together all segments of the community to highlight the bright spots of West Islip, while discussing current day challenges. The Summit will be held Thursday, October 28, 6 p.m., at West Islip High School.
The evening’s festivities will include an overview of the work the Summit Coalition has done during the last 12 months, provide updates on future projects, and announce an outline of issues that need to be tackled with support from local elected officials. In addition, local residents will have an opportunity to meet local businesses at the Business Expo being held during the Summit, and enjoy performances from the West Islip High School Band and Orchestra.
“The Summit is another opportunity for West Islip residents to come together and celebrate our hometown,” says Steve Gellar, co-chair of the West Islip Summit Coalition. “Like any other community, we have things to celebrate and issues to tackle. While the Coalition has worked to tackle many issues, more work needs to be done and I encourage local residents to get involved.”
During the past year, Summit Coalition members held food drives to help fill the shelves of pantries at local churches, advocated for continued police patrols in local shopping centers, and worked with governmental agencies to clean up the creek that runs behind Beach Street Middle School and West Islip High School.
“The Summit Coalition has made some wonderful strides over the past year,” said Annmarie LaRosa, co-chair of the West Islip Summit Coalition. “We continue to seek volunteers to lend their expertise to the Coalition as part of our effort to help make West Islip the best it can be.”
